"Greg is an inspirational bass teacher. I have had lessons on several instruments for over 50 years and they range from awful to brilliant, with Greg at the brilliant end. Two things really stand out: Firstly he is great at picking up an individual's learning style. I always leave feeling I have learned 10% more than I was capable of. Secondly he takes the direction from the student. If you are stuck on something, you will leave the lesson feeling you are an expert in it! Very highly recommended."
Andrew M - Bass Student - Winchester
"Great instruction in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Good mix of theory and practical, always fun and interesting."
Simon B - Bass Student - North Baddesley
"I find Greg's lessons very motivating and I have learned to read music which I never expected!"
Andy J - Bass Student - West Meon
"Greg has a great wealth of knowledge alongside a wealth of experience in music. His lessons are well structured and fun. I've tried a lot of other teachers but Greg’s lessons have been better than the others. I would whole heartedly recommend Greg to anyone interested in learning bass guitar or double bass."
Marcus C - Bass Student - Southampton
"Greg really connects to his pupils and helps you with the real issues you have in playing the bass, hooking on other good stuff as you go. He is a very rare beast: a bass player who teaches bass, not a guitarist, so lessons are specific to your instrument. Highly recommended."
Andy M, bass player with The Fourfathers Band
"I can't say enough how much I've enjoyed the lessons. Every session I'm surprised by how it keeps getting more and more fun. We cover a wide range of styles and Greg never seems to get frustrated, even when I'm really struggling with a new piece or bit of theory. He's got a huge amount of experience both as a theorist and as a professional performer and this first hand knowledge adds even more depth to the lessons. I thought I knew what a good teacher would be like, but from the very first lesson Greg has surpassed this and continues to surprise me with newer, and usually harder, things to learn. I'm determined to get to grade 8 with him as my teacher and then keep on going from there!"
John C - Bass Student - Fair Oak
"First music theory lesson to help me write music, It blew my mind wide open, well worth the money. I highly recommend this guy!"
Jack Y, - Music Theory Student - Poole
"Thanks for lesson today, really enjoyed it. Learned a great deal, but you showed me that my targets are reachable, with time. That means a great deal to me. Apart from that it was great fun. Look forward to our next lesson."
Geoff D, - Bass Student - Berkshire
As a highly qualified music tutor, I see my role as one that extends beyond teaching musical skills alone. I aim to inspire, educate, and support students in achieving their musical aspirations while nurturing their confidence, wellbeing, and personal development. I am committed to creating safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environments in which every learner can thrive.
I deliver interactive, well-structured lessons that are tailored to the individual, using engaging and appropriate material to develop essential technical and musical skills. This personalised approach ensures that lessons are both enjoyable and time-efficient. I provide clear, specific feedback during each session and actively encourage self-assessment, enabling students to take ownership of their learning and reflect on their progress.
Group lessons are approached with the same learner-centred philosophy. Individual feedback is provided to ensure all students can progress, and where necessary, differentiated tasks are used to support personal growth while allowing my attention to be distributed effectively across the group. For advanced and adult learners, I encourage peer assessment as a valuable tool for collaborative learning, allowing students to learn from one another’s experiences, perspectives, and knowledge. I recognise the power of collaborative learning to shape positive outcomes and take responsibility for ensuring it is planned, purposeful, and supportive for all involved.
Alongside instrumental proficiency, I place strong emphasis on developing wider musicianship skills, including music theory and instrument maintenance, recognising their importance in supporting long-term musical development. I actively encourage students to engage with other musicians through bands, ensembles, and informal jam sessions, as interaction, imitation, and shared musical experiences play a vital role in developing confidence, adaptability, and musical identity.
Formal assessment through external awarding bodies is optional but encouraged, offering students a structured means of measuring achievement while gaining industry-recognised qualifications. Throughout all teaching and assessment, I maintain high professional standards, placing ethical responsibility, safeguarding, and the best interests of learners at the heart of my practice.
I am committed to equal opportunities and actively encourage learners of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to engage in music education. To ensure accessibility and inclusion, I offer online tuition, community-based workshops (see photo below), and substantially reduced fees for students who may otherwise face barriers to participation.
Through this philosophy, I believe that learning music should be an empowering and positive experience. With the right support, guidance, and environment, I believe that musical goals are not merely aspirational, but genuinely achievable for all.
